I picked up the mail this morning before my class, and because we’re “only” two months away from Christmas, I received a holiday catalog from Harry & David.  Let me say, I love looking through catalogs, though I very rarely purchase anything from them.  I enjoy looking at the beautifully designed candies and gift boxes, the perfectly decorated rooms.  There is something about the Harry & David catalog, though, that I have always found odd.  Most of their items include fruit – specifically pears.  I am, I’m sure, spoiled because I live in California, and live in a city that is close to farmland, so our produce is usually quite good and affordable, particularly from farmer’s markets.  So, on page 2 we have a 6 lbs box of “Giant Royal Riviera” pears for 34.95 (plus shipping).  That works out to $5.83 per lbs.  For pears.
